Mind The Gap Article

In this article Carver talks about the internet being a tool we use to access information and knowledge. It is our privilege to have access to the whole world like we do and some may take it for granite because there are plenty of people out there who do not have access to the internet. There are so many people out there who have an upper hand because they have access to knowledge that can be very beneficial to everyone but not everyone can get it. Carver talks about how most people have this access but do not have the proper training to be computer literate. I think if more people had a better knowledge of how to navigate the internet and use technology then we would not have as much of a divide.

I think that you got the gist of the article and summarized it all very well. What do you think about what you read? Were you surprised about anything that you read? I know that I was a little shocked at the statistics about adult illiteracy. Good job

Chris,
I think there are more people than not that take the communication tools such as the internet and cell phones for granted. In growing up I didn't have access to either, but what a valuable resource the internet has proven to be.

For people who don't have access, (and yes there are many), they are truly missing out on transactions that can make their lives so much easier. Simple things like registering for class, checking out a book from the library, banking, shopping and email are now things I take for granted.

Without the superhighway, there is an inequality issue that furthers the "haves and have nots" problem we already have in America.

You mention a good point in that if people had the internet but were not trained to navigate it, there would still be a problem. Imagine if I gave you a map of a city and you didn't know how to read it. It would be useless.

The computer literacy is a big issue and you are correct that if that problem were addressed the divide would narrow.

good post.

Yeah Chris,

It's scary how much people take things like education for granted. Aside from education; I remember when I was living in Waycross, Georgia (a real shit hole) I was shocked to learn Southern Georgia didn't financially support Animal Control. You can only imagine the amounts of feral cats and dogs running about.

Anyway, I agree with you Chris, Americans need to take less for granted and give back to our nation as a whole. Unfortunately, if we as a people did that, we would no longer be stereotypical Americans, we would be Canadians. :P
